Arctic Inuit sculpture, two birds, swan-like in appearance, could be loons, possibly mother with juvenile resting on its breast. Carved from grey soapstone. Canadian igloo card in hand identifying artist as “S tervem S.” or “S tewem S.” (handwritten), place of origin is shown as “Great Whale River ”,an Inuit community in Nunavut province, near Hudson Bay. Date shown as “75”, presumed to be 1975. The Canadian registration number is 11903.
This is an imposing sculpture at 11” high by 9” wide by 4” deep. It is very sensitive in its subject matter. We acquired it in 1981 through the former Chicago-based Arctic World Gallery, now assumed to be defunct. #W163
