Basalt is the end product of volcanic lava flow which, when it settles for a few years, cools and becomes a material than can be carved. Salvador Romero found some on one of his sojourns to look for fetishes to carve. Most of his finds are commonplace stones that are carried downstream from mountain snowmelt. Occasionally he comes up with a basalt bed that gets his attention. In this case, a standing bear emerged. So Salvador Romero looked around and found red stone that became a bear cub. Putting them together, he produced this display of motherly love.
ZuniLink acquired this pair directly from Salvador Romero. who has been both a friend and an exceptional artisan for years. Watching his talent mature over that period we have seem impressive refinement of his carving. This is an example of where he has grown to.
