Melvin Sandoval is an unusual artist in the world of fetish carvings. Born to San Felipe Pueblo, his Zuni-ness comes as spouse of full Zuni woman, with whom he has fathered children of Zuni heritage. Melvin built a Shalako House one year at Zuni Pueblo (which we were invited to visit during construction.) Melvin brings a certain artistry to his carvings that offer buyers an abstract experience that encourages impressionistic engagement with the subject matter. So special is Melviin’s approach to art that a book has been written about him.
