Melvin Sandoval, San Felipe, carves a beautiful horned lizard from dolomite. Melvin has a certain style of carving that is more abstract and impressionistic than traditional fetish carvings.
Melvin Sandoval was born into the San Felipe Pueblo but married a Zuni maiden, Irma Vacit, with whom he had 3 children. He is active in the Zuni Pueblo to the point of sponsoring a Shalako house in Zuni for his family.
Melvin is the only carver, to our knowledge, that has had a book devoted exclusively to his carvings and the creative spirit that drives him.
