Please respect that the native peoples living in the frigid temperatures and icy waters of the Bering Sea subsist on harvested sea life. After the nutrients have been distributed to the community, the leftover debris is cast off. After long periods of burial or afloat in the local waters, they reappear in weathered condition and become prized carving material.
Ossified detritus is debris/flotsam that has been exposed to the elements over years. The original source of the material can’t be established, given its age and anonymity. As impressive as this carving is in photographs, it is even more so when seen in person. We acquired this object of Eskimo art in 2000. Home for FN is/was likely on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea.
In accordance with international treaties, objects that include marine mammal residue, even ossified material, may only be shipped outside the USA with a Federal permit. The states of California, New Jersey and New York also have restrictions on such shipments. It is wise to check your state’s rules before ordering if you have any concerns.
