Otter figure, carving, from ossified bone on a base of the same material. Signed R Silook, probably Roger Silook, who lived on St Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea at the time. Silook is a common surname on the island, which sits close to the western edge of USA/Alaskan territory. Acquired by Aboriginals: Art of the First Person in 2000

Please respect that in their inhospitable Arctic environment of St. Lawrence Island, Yupik Eskimos subsist on sea life from passing schools. Inedible which are discarded or left behind, may wash in from the sea or appear when soil is washed away. It is used for carving. Material that often floats to shore after decades of ossification is prized for carving.
In accordance with international treaties, while it is perfectly acceptable for shipping within the USA, items that may include marine mammal residue, even ancient fossils, may not be shipped outside the United States without a special US government permit.
