Additional Info

Please understand that Savoonga is a Yupik community on St. Lawrence Island in the harsh Bering Sea. Natives there subsist on a diet of sea life they harvest from local waters. Once the nutrients have been distributed to the community, the inedible scraps are discarded and either covered by turndra over decades or washed out to sea where they are tumbled and tossed as flotsam. Decades later they may appear as debris and detritus on the island. At this point, they are valued specimens from which Yupik natives carve effigies of the creatures whose spirits remain. In this way, the spirit of the food provider is honored.
